Slow shooting on a Sunday- the birthday edition – Santa Barbara, Solvang, and Santa Ynez Wine Valley

We went to for a little road trip for my birthday this year.  We meant to just do Santa Barbara, but somehow for the second time, Santa Barbara turned into Solvang, which meanders into Santa Ynez wine country.  Which pretty much is perfect.

The only thing we really planned on doing was picking Blueberries at Santa Barbara Blueberries. I planned on it at least, why that’s the only thing I had planned for my birthday… I’m not sure, but if you’re ever in Santa Barbara, you have to go there. The blueberries taste like Sprite. Amazing Blueberry Sprite.

The best part of the trip was not really having solid plans, (which usually freaks me out) but it left us open to go wherever the day took us. We started at one spot on advice from a friend, and along the way ran into ridiculously friendly locals who  advised us on the best places to go next. It could not have turned out better if we planned it.

Sean and I are avid people watchers, and arguably very obvious eavesdroppers so a lot of times we sit at the bar at restaurants so we can listen to conversations and be entertained by other people’s lives. (that and if it’s baseball season, the old man in me enjoys watching baseball with a cold beer).  But that’s usually where we meet really cool people. And people were just different up there. I got advise on growing a winter garden, and we met a man named Page who told us that we need to have kids… a lot of them, and soon, because we’re the type of people he wants to populate the world. Very odd, but ridiculously nice compliment.

But that’s how the weekend went. A little quirky, but mostly slow, peaceful,  wandering and perfect. Santa Barbara Blueberries

The Casillas Family and Baby Kennedy – Downtown Riverside Family Portraits

I can’t say the Casillas family were the lucky winners of my summer contest, because it had little to do with luck. It was a drawing, but Jennelle sent over enough friends to be entered in the drawing 5 times. She kind of worked her butt off, and I was so happy that it went to such a deserving winner!

Jennelle doesn’t have wedding photos to look back on, so she was stoked at the opportunity to have some family portraits of her new little family. And I am thrilled at the chance to give her something so her memories can last a lifetime. inland Empire and Orange County Family Photographer

The Goodmans – Temecula Family Portraits

The Goodmans are adorable.  All three of them. But especially Olivia. She’s at the stage where all she wants to do is run. Not walk. Run. But really…. she has a point. Why waste time walking when you could run there? Kids are such strange little brilliant people.

Beautiful Baby Brooke – Inland Empire Newborn Photography

Baby Brooke is beautiful. Unarguably flawless. Babies just have a way of being that way. I love my first steps into a stranger’s house when I come over for newborn portraits. I creep in, with my box of props that’s bigger than me, and there’s this slightly nervous/but totally not nervous exchange between me and the parents. Hi stranger, please come into our home… we want to show you our child… uuummm. But then we turn a corner, or someone steps out of the way and I see the little brand new human. It’s the ultimate ice breaker. We all usually just stare for a moment, and all insecurities melt away and we marvel at this tiny. loving. living. genius.

Fairytales, Reality + A Perfectly Elegant Evening: John and Cheryl – a Grand Tradition Estate Wedding

I think I enjoy wedding toasts more as a photographer than as a guest. As a photographer, you get to know the bride and groom in the months leading up to their wedding, but there’s something that’s uncovered during the speeches that just kind of fills in the gaps for me, and yes, often it’s the point that gets my tear ducts producing.

There was already a pretty special place in my heart for John and Cheryl when their wedding day rolled around. The two have such a love for each other, their happiness is ridiculously contagious. But first hearing John’s impromptu speech about all the hard work Cheryl put in to the wedding, and then hearing about her thanksgiving dinners that friends stop eating in anticipation for – I get to learn just how amazing these people are to their friends and family as well.

It rained on the morning that John and Cheryl were married. It rained in the middle of summer in Southern California. With thunder, lightning, and all the rest. As I was freaking out, trying to dig my rain gear out of the back of my closet, I knew in the back of my mind that one thing I wouldn’t need to freak out about was my bride freaking out.

If Cheryl wasn’t a nurse, (which I’m pretty sure she’s perfect at) she would make an amazing wedding coordinator. She planned the perfect wedding. Right down to the last bit of bling that she glued on to her shoes, and the toys and games on the kids table. And to be honest, rain would put a little damper on the day’s events. But I knew Cheryl would be perfectly fine as long as her friends and family were there to witness her marry the man she loves. And I knew John would be fine as long as Cheryl was happy.

John and Cheryl, thank you for letting me be a part of your day. It was fairytale-perfect. And, more importantly, thank you for reminding me to not sweat the small stuff, and focus on the important things life.

The Ramsay Family – Balboa Park Family Portraits

Before meeting this beautiful family, I got a warning about their little boy. Really. “He’s basically perfect, so be careful.” And he was. Such a little cutie, with a smile that can pretty much melt your heart. He melted mine for sure, but I’m a sucker for boys.

The Hawthorne Family – Balboa Park, San Diego Family Portraits

I just came home from a wedding planning session with my best friend, (HERS not mine!) and went to work to get this blog up. And then it hit me. Life in general… hit me. Kinda of hard. I guess I’m mostly freaking out about suddenly being “all grown up.” (which is totally someone else’s job, not mine, right?)

But in the past 5 days, my brother got married, my best friend got engaged, and now I’m looking over these pictures of Allison and her family, and I just remember being about the same age as Allison’s oldest daughter and running around the kindergarden playground. with Allison. I’ve known her for 20 years? whhooowww.

So I’m going to sit and digest the last 20 years of my life, and freak out about the next 20. Fortunately, I’m comforted by the beautiful Hawthorne family, the girls are both so sweet and slightly mischievous. Kinda makes me want two of my own. eek.
